Segovia is one of Spain's most stunning and historic cities, with multiple UNESCO World Heritage sites, including the Alcazar of Segovia, the cathedral, and the Roman aqueduct. From its medieval streets to its impressive landmarks, there are many things to see and do in Segovia. Here are five must-see attractions that you won't want to miss on your day trip to this beautiful city.
Overlooking Segovia stands its majestic Alcázar, an unforgettable castle that is said to have inspired Walt Disney's Cinderella castle. The medieval castle was built on top of a large rock and is often called a "ship-shaped fortress." It took an air of Gothic elegance with Islamic influence visibly seen on the stucco ceilings. You can tour most of the castle and even climb up over 100 steps to the tower.
Located right on the Plaza Mayor, the incredibly imposing Cathedral is a sight to behold. It's equally stunning inside with beautiful chapels, large stained glass windows, and paintings like The Tree of Life by Ignacio de Ries.
Make your way from the Cathedral to the Aqueduct through Juan Bravo street. Although you will most likely not find big brand names you will find a cute shopping street filled with small boutique shops.
Segovia is home to the best-preserved Roman construction from the 1st century, an impressive aqueduct, standing 94 feet tall and nearly 3000 feet long. The aqueduct supplied water from the Rio Frio to the city of Segovia for decades and it's certainly the most recognizable structure in Segovia today.
Down the cobbled streets of the Aqueduct, you'll find a wide selection of restaurants to dine at with a stunning view of the monument.
A signature dish of Segovia is Cochinillo Asado- or roast suckling pig. The traditional dish goes back many years and is a must-try while in Segovia. We opted for and highly recommend dining at Meson de Candido for a taste of Segovian specialties.
FEATURED LUNCH
Meson de Candido
It's been a family-run restaurant since 1786 and is home to the best Cochinillo Asado in Segovia. The Cochinillo's meat is so soft that they cut it with a plate which is then smashed on the floor to complete the show. For desserts, try the Torrija de Leche Caramelizada con Helado- a Spanish-style french toast with ice cream. It's a 10/10.
